Aug 03, 2011 Vulnerabilities in Google Chrome OS extensions could give malicious hackers an easy point of attack to steal users' passwords, contacts, email, and more, according to two researchers speaking at Black Hat, a UBM TechWeb event, in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to install Mac OS to your Chromebook. Why would someone do that? Who cares! It just goes to show you the lengths people will go just to do it and care less about why they’re doing it. “For the sake of knowing you can,” is probably the best answer anyone can give.

If you’re one of those people, or you’re just interested in knowing how it was done, then read on. There’s a step-by-step guide on how to achieve the same results. However, be warned: this is a very involved process that, without any preliminary steps taken, one can end up with a Chromebook they can’t recover.

Backup Your Chromebook

The last thing you want to do is make the mistake of skipping backing up a recovery image of your Chromebook. What does it do for you? If you make a grave error, one that cannot be reverted, you can always try again by booting a recovery image to your Chromebook, thereby recovering your Chrome OS, hence, the name “recovery image.”

Chromebook comes with its own recovery tool called “Chromebook Recovery Utility,” which you can nab from the Chrome Web Store. You’ll need a USB stick or SD card that’s 4GB or more to create a valid recovery image, as well as the instructions need to create one.

You should also backup any data you want to keep, like pictures, videos, movies, TV shows–any kind of media files. Google Drive is a great tool and can hold up to 15 GB of files for free. You just need a Google account to access Google Drive.

Installing Linux

You might be saying to yourself, “I want Mac OS, not Linux,” but put the breaks on that thought. In order to get Mac OS running, you want to run VirtualBox and VirtualBox can be ran through Linux. In this guide, you’ll be using Ubuntu Linux to run VirtualBox.

With VirtualBox, you can then emulate Mac OS. It’s a clever work around. It’s like the movie Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, “…a dream within a dream…” but instead of dreams, it’s an operating system within an operating system. And to do that, you need to first open Crosh, Chrome OS developer shell.

Entering Developer Mode

In order to make the changes with Crosh, you need to be in Developer Mode. Now, before you hop in, make sure you’ve made all the necessary backups because once you enter Developer Mode, everything on your computer will be wiped clean. You have been warned.

1. Press and hold together these two keys and buttons: ESC + Refresh (F3 or an arrow chasing its tail) and then just tap the Power button.

2. Ignore the warning. Press together the keys Ctrl + D.

3. On the next screen, press the Enter key. You are now in Developer Mode.

Getting Crosh Up and Running

Now that you’re in developer mode, you can get Crosh running and have access to the commands needed to install Ubuntu Linux to your Chromebook.

1. Press together these three keys: Ctrl + Alt + T. This will open a terminal window.

2. Now type this command, without quotations, “shell.”

3. To make life easier for you, type this script without quotations, “$ cd ~/Downloads/” and hit the Enter key.

4. Next, type “wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/divx118/crouton-packages/master/change-kernel-flags” and tap the Enter key.

5. Then type “sudo sh ~/Downloads/change-kernel-flags” and hit the Enter key again.

6. Finally, type “sudo startunity.”

7. Open the terminal again in Linux with the shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T.

8. Type these commands in succession, hitting the Enter key after each step.

Installing VirtualBox

With Linux now running, you need to install VirtualBox. And you can do that by grabbing the file from VirtualBox website.

1. Choose Ubuntu 14.04 / 14.10 / 15.04.

2. Start the installation process by clicking Open with Ubuntu Software Center (default).

3. When prompted, choose Install.

2. In VirtualBox, click New. When prompted, name your virtual machine. For the sake of simplicity, “Mac” works just fine.

3. Next you’ll see a colored line; that is your memory size. You want to give enough of your memory to your VM and keep that line in the green, but no more and no less. Failing to do so can cause problems running VirtualBox.

4. Now it’s time to create a virtual disk image now. VirtualBox will let you know you should have at least 20GB. You can use your Chromebook to do it, if you have the space or, alternatively, use an external drive like a USB drive or SD card. Click Create.

5. Choose Create VDI and then Next.
