What is special about Topre Key Switches?
Topre key switches are made by the Topre Corporation of Japan. They use electrostatic capacitance to detect each keystroke electrically, without any circuit closure. This method eliminates a phenomena known as “Chatter” or “Key Chatter” where two or more keystrokes are detected for one physical keystroke. The capacitance method is so precise, it is also used in military applications. Topre key switches also provide a silky smooth tactile feeling and a unique gentle “thock” sound as the keystroke bottoms out. This gives an audible indicator that a precise keystroke has been registered, helping the user detect when they have keyed an error.
What is a Topre Silent Key Switch?
Topre silent key switches work in the same way as regular Topre key switches, but they have the addition of a ‘Silent membrane’ which dampens the sound of each keystroke, significantly reducing the sound. They also have a slightly reduced key travel of 3.8 mm.

Are layouts available for other languages?
All HHKB models with printed keycap legends have a US ANSI layout. You may change the regional settings on your PC, Mac or mobild device to match your country, but we dont currently offer the keyboard with Legends printed for any other layout.

HHKB is compatible and supported on several versions of Windows and macOS. HHKB HYBRID and HYBRID Type-S are also compatible with some versions of iPadOS, iOS and Android – for more details, please see the system requirements for each HHKB product.

HHKB may work with many other operating systems, including many Linux distributions. However, PFU cannot guarantee compatibility with any operating systems other than those listed in ‘System Requirements’ on this website.

Is there a HHKB 'Full-size' keyboard?
No, all HKKB models are ultra-compact Tenkeyless keyboards, but we do have Full-size professional keyboards in our REALFORCE range which can be viewed here.
What is a Tenkeyless keyboard?
A tenkeyless keyboard is a smaller format keyboard that does not include the number pad that is found on full-size keyboards.

HHKB is built to last. Keycaps are made from premium, textured, shine-resistant PBT which is a highly durable plastic. The Topre key switches are rated for a lifetime of 50 million keystrokes. We use dye-sublimation printing method to produce fade resistant keycap legends (HHKB models witb printed keycaps).
